Google AI Mode
AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience: a full-page AI answer with follow-up questions, distinct from the AI Overview summaries that sit above classic results. It represents Google's version of the assistant-style search that ChatGPT normalized, running on Gemini models with live web grounding.
AI Mode supports longer conversations than AI Overviews. A buyer can refine a question from "who's good?" to "who's open now?" or "who handles insurance claims?" Each answer can use profile data, reviews, and pages that describe the business's services.
AI Mode can break a question into several related searches and synthesize their results. A page about insurance claim documentation may appear in a conversation that began with "who's the best roofer near me." Cover the useful questions customers ask across the decision process instead of focusing only on one head term.
Follow-up questions may continue discussing businesses named earlier in the session. Appearing in the first answer can therefore create more opportunities for later mentions, while an omitted business may remain absent from that conversation.
When sampling AI Mode, record the full conversation rather than isolated prompts. The first question, follow-up order, supplied location, and prior names can all affect later answers. Start a new session for each independent run so context from an earlier test does not carry into the next sample.
Search Console does not report AI Mode as a separate surface, so its traffic and impressions cannot be cleanly separated from ordinary search. Precise AI Mode figures therefore depend on estimates or direct sampling. Test representative buyer questions and document the conditions, as described in the Routeless methodology.
There is no paid AI Mode ranking. Maintain accurate profiles, reviews, and service pages, then measure sampled answers. The free report shows what assistants currently say when buyers ask about a market.
