Indexation

Indexation is whether a page is in Google's index at all — discovered, crawled, evaluated, and stored so it can rank. 'Crawled — currently not indexed' is Google inspecting a page and declining it, the quiet verdict that a page adds nothing worth keeping.

Indexation is the honest scoreboard for programmatic content, because it is Google's revealed preference: no penalty, no message, just pages that never enter the game. A batch of location pages indexing at 30% is an instruction to build deeper pages, not more of them.

The two statuses people confuse are worth separating. "Discovered — currently not indexed" means Google knows the URL exists and has not bothered to fetch it, usually a crawl-priority signal about the site as a whole. "Crawled — currently not indexed" is worse and more specific: Google fetched the page, read it, and decided against storing it. The first is a discovery problem you can sometimes fix with links and sitemaps. The second is a quality verdict, and resubmitting it changes nothing.

Reading indexation as a rate rather than a status is what makes it useful for programmatic work. One page not indexing is noise. Forty percent of a batch not indexing is a measurement of how the template is being received, available within weeks and long before any ranking data would arrive. It is the only fast feedback loop this kind of content has.

The trap is treating a low rate as a technical problem. Teams respond by adding internal links, pinging sitemaps, and requesting indexing page by page — which occasionally forces individual URLs in and never fixes the rate, because the rate was a judgment about substance. Pages that get forced in and then never receive impressions have confirmed the verdict rather than overturned it.

Search Console reports it per page and the URL Inspection API reports it in bulk, which is why our scaling plan reads indexation before each batch: publish thirty pilot city pages, measure, then earn the next fifty. Volume follows evidence, never the reverse — see crawl budget for what the alternative costs.
