Knowledge Panel

A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows for a recognized entity — a business, person, or organization — assembled from structured data, authoritative sites, and Google's own graph. Earning one is a symptom of entity clarity, not a feature you apply for.

Panels matter as a diagnostic: if Google confidently assembles a box about your business, its systems have resolved you into a known entity with consistent facts. If it cannot, the same ambiguity is degrading every machine-mediated surface, including AI answers built on the same graph.

Two different boxes get called knowledge panels, and conflating them causes confusion. A local business panel is generated from a Google Business Profile and appears for businesses with a verified listing — most service businesses have one and may not realise it counts. A brand or organisation panel is assembled from the Knowledge Graph using third-party corroboration, and is much harder to earn because it requires the wider web to describe you consistently.

The second kind is the meaningful signal. It means Google has enough independent evidence to state facts about your organisation without relying on anything you published. That threshold is roughly the same one an AI assistant crosses before it will confidently recommend a business by name, which is why panel presence and AI visibility tend to move together.

Once a panel exists you can claim it, which allows suggesting corrections and adds a small amount of control. Claiming is verification of who you are, not editorial authority: Google accepts or ignores suggested edits based on whether the wider evidence supports them. A business trying to correct a panel by editing only its own site usually fails, because the panel is reflecting the consensus of sources it trusts more.

The inputs are the usual suspects — consistent NAP, schema markup declaring identity, profiles that interlink, and third-party corroboration. Fix the entity and the panel tends to follow. Chasing the panel directly, without fixing what it reflects, is optimising for the symptom.
