Twilio integration development

Routeless uses Twilio for SMS and WhatsApp messaging inside lead, booking, and automation workflows. Verified systems send operator alerts, receive inbound messages, process delivery callbacks, and reject invalid webhook signatures. Message transport is only one part of the implementation; consent, destination validity, template requirements, and permanent delivery errors remain application responsibilities.

Evidence boundary

What the implementation proves.

Routeless, Routeless Platform, Routeless Go, Routeless Core, and Real Estate Nemo contain Twilio message clients, signed webhook receivers, status handling, notification proxies, and operational error classification.

The evidence supports SMS and Twilio-delivered WhatsApp workflows. It does not establish Twilio partnership, carrier approval, guaranteed delivery, or Twilio Verify and voice coverage on every named project.

Verified capabilities

  • Outbound SMS and WhatsApp messaging
  • Inbound message webhooks and delivery-status callbacks
  • Twilio webhook signature validation
  • Consent-aware notification routing and permanent-error classification
Implemented workflows

How data moves through the integration.

Workflow 01

Deliver lead and booking alerts

A completed intake or booking event produces a bounded operator message and sends it through Twilio without exposing Twilio credentials to the website.

Evidence: Verified in Routeless lead notifications and the Real Estate Nemo booking-summary workflow.

Workflow 02

Receive inbound SMS and WhatsApp

The public webhook verifies the Twilio signature, resolves the destination and business, stores the message once, and hands accepted content to the CRM or automation runtime.

Evidence: Verified in Routeless Platform channel routes, shared signature code, inbound resolvers, and tests.

Workflow 03

Classify failed delivery

The service records Twilio error codes and distinguishes permanent failures such as invalid or opted-out destinations from transport failures that may be retried.

Evidence: Verified in Routeless Platform service notifications and WhatsApp automation jobs.

Authentication and operations

Access, secrets, and recovery are part of the build.

Authentication model

Twilio account credentials stay in server configuration. Inbound SMS, WhatsApp, and status callbacks verify the X-Twilio-Signature with the auth token and the public request URL before processing form fields.

Credential handling

Twilio credentials and sender configuration remain server-side. Websites and client applications do not receive the provider credential.

Failure behavior

Missing configuration and invalid inbound signatures stop processing. Invalid, opted-out, or out-of-session destinations are treated as permanent failures rather than retried indefinitely.

Vendor and implementation constraints

Limits that affect the scope.

  • Consent and sender rules are not optionalA working API credential does not grant permission to message a person. The application needs a documented consent path, sender configuration, and opt-out handling.
  • Webhook validation depends on the public URLTwilio signs the request URL and form fields. Reverse proxies and environment hostnames must preserve the URL used during validation.
  • WhatsApp has additional policy rulesTwilio's WhatsApp transport still follows WhatsApp template and customer-service-window requirements. SMS success does not imply a free-form WhatsApp message is allowed.

Twilio integration FAQ

Questions that change the implementation.

Yes. The integration can route inbound messages, outbound notifications, and status callbacks between Twilio and a CRM. The scope must define phone ownership, consent, contact matching, conversation history, and failure recovery.

The receiver validates Twilio's request signature against the public request URL and submitted fields before accepting the event.

No. The initial response means Twilio accepted the request. Delivery status can change later, so workflows that depend on receipt need status callbacks and a policy for failed or undeliverable destinations.

Yes, but the channels have different sender, consent, and template requirements. Routeless keeps channel handling separate even when both messages use Twilio's infrastructure.
