How I Built and Sold an Online Business for $75,000

Before Routeless, I built an educational WordPress site from scratch, grew it to about 500 articles, turned it into an affiliate and lead-generation business, and sold it through Empire Flippers for $75,000 in 2020.

Why I built it

Before building Routeless, I wanted to understand what it actually took to build an online business, not just launch a website. CBD Education Online became that experiment. I designed and developed the WordPress site myself, learned what information visitors were looking for, and developed a content and monetization operation around it.

How it evolved

I wrote the first approximately 100 educational articles personally. As the project grew, I built editorial templates and began working with freelance writers and editors. The content library eventually reached around 500 articles.

The main challenge was finding useful subjects and formats that people searched for. Experimenting and responding to what worked mattered far more than publishing more pages.

The software behind the business

I also created custom WordPress templates, affiliate and tracking integrations, and a branching lead-qualification tool. Based on what a visitor was reading, it asked contextual questions, identified the right next step, and, where relevant, routed consultation requests to pharmacist partners through automated lead notifications and a shared record.

The commercial result

The site ultimately became an affiliate and lead-generation business. In 2020, I sold the complete operation, including the website, domain, and business relationships, through Empire Flippers for $75,000.

A note on the traffic figure

At its peak, I recall the site reaching more than 100,000 monthly organic users. The original analytics reports are no longer available, so this is a founder-reported historical figure rather than an independently verified metric. The $75,000 sale, however, is documented in the brokerage transaction record.

What I carried into Routeless

That experience shapes how I think about websites today. A site has to help people, make sense operationally, and create value for the business behind it. I now bring that same product and business perspective to Routeless.
