Backlinks

Backlinks are links from other websites to yours — the web's citations. They remain among the strongest ranking evidence because they are votes someone else chose to cast, and their value concentrates: one link from a relevant, authoritative site outweighs hundreds from junk.

Honest link earning follows honest assets: research worth citing, data journalists can quote, tools people reference, expertise local press asks about. Purchased links from farms and guest-post networks are the opposite trade — policed categories, real penalty risk, and no effect on the AI layer, which reads evidence rather than counting votes.

Relevance is the axis most people underweight. A link from a regional builders' association, a supplier's contractor directory, or a local news story about a storm response is worth more to a roofing company than a link from a high-authority site with no topical connection, because it corroborates what the business is and not merely that it exists. Search systems and AI retrieval both use links partly as context, and context from an unrelated source carries little.

For local service businesses the realistic sources are unglamorous and finite: trade associations and licensing bodies, manufacturer and franchise locators, chambers of commerce, suppliers, sponsorships with a real page, local press covering something you actually did, and the occasional resource page. That list is short enough to work through deliberately in a quarter, which is a better use of budget than any vendor promising fifty links a month.

Publishable research is the repeatable engine. A dataset with a methodology page gives anyone writing about the topic a reason to link — which is precisely why our study is licensed for reuse with attribution.

One caution against over-indexing on links: they are a strong ranking input and a weak AI-visibility input. Assistants recommending a local business lean on reviews, profile data, and discussion far more than on link graphs. A business with a modest link profile and a dense, recent review footprint routinely gets named ahead of a better-linked competitor, which is not how classic SEO intuition would predict it.
