Topical Authority

Topical authority is a site's earned credibility on a subject, built by covering it deeply and coherently — connected pages answering the questions the topic raises, cited by others, consistent over time. Sites with it rank faster on new content within their topic than strangers do.

Authority compounds structurally: a hub explains the subject, spokes answer its specific questions, internal links declare the relationships, and outside citations confirm them. A site with fifty coherent pages on one subject routinely outranks a site with five hundred scattered ones.

The compounding is the whole point, and it is why the effort curve inverts over time. Early pages in a topic rank slowly and need everything — links, patience, luck. Once a site has demonstrated depth, new pages within that topic start with inherited standing: they are discovered faster, indexed faster, and given the benefit of the doubt on relevance. The tenth page on a subject is materially cheaper to rank than the first.

Coverage means answering the questions a topic actually raises, not producing keyword variants of the same page. A genuine map of a subject includes its definitions, its methods, its costs, its failure modes, its comparisons, and the adjacent questions people ask next. A keyword-derived map produces "roof repair cost," "roof repair pricing," and "how much does roof repair cost" as three pages, which is one page and two dilutions.

The most common way sites forfeit authority is diversifying too early — adding a second and third subject before the first is genuinely covered. Three shallow topics beat none, but they lose consistently to one site that owns a subject. For a local business the topic is usually narrower than instinct suggests: not "home services" but the specific trade, in the specific market, with the specific problems its customers have.

It is also the honest rationale for this glossary — clean definitions of every concept in AI visibility, cross-linked to the guides and research that go deeper. Definitional pages are what language models quote, and quoting is the modern citation.
