Local Pack

The local pack is the map-plus-three-listings block Google shows for searches with local intent. It is powered by Google Business Profiles rather than websites, ranked by relevance, distance, and prominence — and for most service businesses it produces more calls than the classic organic results below it.

The pack's three inputs decompose into work. Relevance: complete profile categories and services. Distance: where the searcher stands, which you cannot control. Prominence: reviews (count, recency, specificity), citations, and the general weight of evidence around the business.

Distance being uncontrollable is the fact that reframes local strategy, because it means there is no single local pack ranking. Two people searching the same words from opposite sides of a city see different packs. A business is not "ranked third for plumber" — it is ranked third within a radius that shrinks as competition thickens. Any rank tracker reporting one number for a local query has chosen a coordinate on your behalf, and the useful version of that report is a grid across the service area rather than a single position.

Prominence is where the actual competition happens, since relevance is quickly maxed out by any business that fills in its profile properly and distance is fixed. Reviews carry most of the weight, and their recency and specificity matter more than the lifetime total — which is the whole argument for treating review velocity as an operational routine rather than a campaign.

For service-area businesses the pack behaves differently and less generously. Without a storefront address, appearances are driven by the service areas defined on the profile and by proximity to the business's registered location, which is why coverage tends to fade at the edges of a claimed territory no matter how the profile is configured.

The pack also feeds the AI layer: assistants asked for local recommendations read profile data and reviews as core evidence. In our research, the businesses AI named repeatedly were overwhelmingly ones with strong profile-and-review footprints — the same inputs, a second scoreboard, and a good reason to treat profile work as serving both channels at once.
