NAP Consistency
NAP consistency means a business's name, address, and phone number appear identically everywhere they are published — website, Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles. Machines match these fields to connect evidence to the right entity; disagreement fragments trust and answers.
The failure mode is accumulation: a suite number here, an old tracking phone there, "LLC" on some listings, an ampersand versus "and". Humans read through the noise; matching algorithms lose confidence, and a business whose data disagrees with itself competes against its own ghosts.
The variations that actually cause problems are worth distinguishing from the ones that do not. Formatting differences a parser normalises — "Street" versus "St.", punctuation in a phone number, capitalisation — are largely harmless. Substantive differences are the risk: a different suite number, a different phone line, a name that includes or omits a division, an old address that still resolves. Chasing cosmetic inconsistency across a hundred directories is busywork; finding the three listings with a genuinely wrong phone number is the job.
Call tracking numbers deserve specific mention because they are the most common self-inflicted case. Publishing a different tracked number on each channel is standard marketing practice and directly undermines entity matching. The workable compromise is one canonical number in every citation and profile, with tracking numbers confined to contexts that do not become citations — paid landing pages, print, vehicle wraps.
Multi-location and franchise businesses carry the hardest version of this, since corporate systems, local managers, and national aggregators all publish independently. Without one owned source of truth that everything else is generated from, the data diverges by default.
Consistency is also hallucination insurance — when an assistant retrieves three sources with three phone numbers, whichever it repeats is a coin flip, and the hallucination it produces is one you supplied. One canonical NAP, enforced everywhere, is dull work that pays in every machine-mediated channel at once: local pack, knowledge panel, and AI recommendation all rest on the same resolved entity.
