Local Citations
Local citations are mentions of a business's name, address, and phone on other websites — directories, maps services, industry associations, chambers of commerce. They corroborate that the business exists where it claims, and the major ones double as sources AI assistants read when recommending.
A small set of authoritative, trade-relevant sources can matter more than hundreds of low-value directories. The useful sources vary by trade. Routeless research records which sites assistants cite in each sampled market; legal answers often use sources such as Avvo, Justia, and Super Lawyers, while roofing answers more often include the BBB, Angi, and Reddit threads.
Across 2,840 sources in the Routeless sample, directories accounted for about 21% of citations on average. The share ranged from roughly 8% in med spa answers to more than 40% in some legal markets. At the low end, assistants used business websites and discussion threads more often, so directory work may deserve less priority in those trades.
Prioritize sources by relevance instead of counting listings. Start with major data aggregators, the licensing or association body for the trade, vertical directories that assistants cite in the market, and local institutions with maintained pages. Additional low-value listings create more places where business information can become outdated.
Maintenance is where the real risk sits, because citations decay silently. Businesses move, phone systems change, a directory imports stale data from an aggregator, and suddenly three sources disagree about where you are. Every one of those disagreements is a small reduction in how confidently a machine can resolve you.
Do not confuse local citations with AI citations, the sources an assistant links in an answer. A local citation can also become an AI citation, so accuracy matters more than the total number of listings.
