SERP

SERP stands for search engine results page — everything a search returns: ads, AI Overviews, local packs, organic listings, snippets, and question boxes. Reading a SERP before targeting a keyword shows what kind of result Google believes the searcher wants, which decides what could possibly rank.

SERPs are the ground truth intent check. If "roofing marketing" returns agencies and guides, Google has decided it is a commercial-research query; no local roofer's homepage will rank for it regardless of optimization. If a query returns a map pack, it is local; if it returns an AI Overview, presence in the synthesis matters as much as any ranking.

The composition also determines what a ranking is worth, which raw position data cannot tell you. Position three sounds strong and can mean almost nothing: above it might sit four ads, an AI Overview, a local pack, and a People Also Ask box, putting the first organic result well below the fold on a phone. On a sparse results page, position five can be visible immediately. Two pages with identical reported positions can differ by an order of magnitude in actual traffic.

Results are also personalised and localised, so there is no single SERP to inspect. Location changes local queries completely, search history nudges results, and device changes the layout and the fold. Checking from your own logged-in browser at your office is the least representative view available. Incognito plus an explicit location, or a tool that lets you set one, is the minimum for an honest look.

SERPs shift, too. Feature composition for a query changes as Google tests, and AI Overviews in particular appear and disappear for the same query across weeks. A page built for a results page that has since changed shape can lose traffic without losing position, which is a diagnosis nobody reaches by looking only at rank reports.

This is why keyword lists without SERP inspection mislead: volume says how many people search, the SERP says what they get. Both, together, say whether a page is worth building — a rule we apply to our own pages before publishing them.
