Internal Linking

Internal links connect pages within a site, and they do three jobs at once: route visitors to the next useful page, distribute ranking equity from strong pages to new ones, and teach machines the site's structure — which pages matter and what relates to what.

Links are also a depth control: a page four clicks from the homepage reads as unimportant regardless of quality. Moving a section into the global navigation moves its every child two clicks shallower — the reason our research hub sits in the header rather than the footer.

Anchor text is the part with the most leverage and the least attention. It is the clearest statement a site can make about what the destination page is for, and internal anchors are entirely within your control in a way that external ones never are. A hundred internal links saying "learn more" describe nothing. The same links saying "roofing market data for Phoenix" describe a page precisely, repeatedly, and consistently.

Direction matters as much as quantity. Equity flows along links, so the useful move is from pages that already have authority — the homepage, an established guide, a service page that ranks — toward pages that need it. New content linked only from an archive index and a sitemap is effectively orphaned. New content linked from three relevant, established pages starts with borrowed standing.

The most common structural mistake in programmatic sets is linking every page to every other page. It feels thorough and it destroys the signal: if a Phoenix roofing page links to all thirty city pages equally, none of those links says anything about relationship. Linking to genuine neighbours — the same trade in nearby cities, the same city in other trades, the study the page belongs to — creates a structure a machine can actually read.

The discipline is linking with intent: from authority pages to pages that need lift, between genuinely related content, with anchor text that says what waits at the other end. Mesh generated from real relationships beats decoration every time, and it is how topical authority gets built rather than merely claimed.
