We asked three AI assistants to recommend a lawyer 90 times.

Some prospective clients ask ChatGPT or Perplexity who to hire while they compare firms and search results. So we ran the experiment: 6 hiring questions across 5 metros — Las Vegas, NV, Tampa, FL, Denver, CO, Phoenix, AZ, Austin, TX — put to 3 assistants on July 26, 2026. Every answer was saved. Here is what came back.

238 different law firms named across 90 answers
11/29 questions where no two assistants named a single business in common
36.4% of the 744 sources cited were directories, not company websites
26.7% of ChatGPT answers still named no specific business

The assistants are already naming names

Asked who to hire, these assistants did not deflect to a directory or lecture the buyer about getting three quotes. They answered with specific companies, by name, in nearly every response — 238 different law firms across the 90 answers we collected. Whatever else that means, these results show that assistants are already making recommendations in this category, and naming specific businesses.

The assistants do not agree with each other

There is no single "AI answer" to optimize for. Comparing the businesses each assistant named for the same question in the same city, 11 of 29 comparisons produced no overlap at all — three assistants, three completely different shortlists. Across the whole set they named 238 different law firms. Being recommended by one tells you very little about the others.

Businesses the assistants named

These are the law firms recommended more than once in each city during the run. They are not our clients and this is not a ranking of quality — it is a record of who the assistants surfaced on July 26, 2026. If you are in one of these markets and not on this list, that is the gap worth closing.

  • Las Vegas, NV Naqvi Injury Law, Richard Harris Law Firm, Willick Law Group
  • Phoenix, AZ Kelly Law Team, Lamber Goodnow Injury Lawyers, Arizona Law Group
  • Denver, CO Bachus & Schanker, Zaner Harden Law
  • Tampa, FL Morgan & Morgan, Catania & Catania
  • Austin, TX McMinn

Sources behind the recommendations

All three assistants searched the web before answering and cited what they read, so we counted every source. These are the sites doing the actual work of deciding which businesses get mentioned:

  • justia.com50
  • avvo.com34
  • superlawyers.com24
  • reddit.com21
  • expertise.com21
  • lawleaderboard.com20
  • attorneys.superlawyers.com19
  • lawyers.com15
  • bestlawyers.com15
  • profiles.superlawyers.com14

Better than a third of the cited evidence came from aggregators rather than from the businesses themselves — the highest share of any industry we measured. Your own site still matters, because it is what those profiles get checked against, but the listings are doing more of the recommending here than most owners realize.

Exactly what we asked

Published so the study can be checked rather than taken on trust. Each question was put to all 3 assistants in all 5 cities:

  • Who is the best personal injury lawyer in [city]? commercial
  • I was just rear-ended in [city] and the other driver's insurance is calling me. Which local law firm should I contact? situational
  • Who is the best family law attorney in [city]? commercial
  • My spouse and I are separating in [city] and we own a house together. Which local attorney should I hire? situational
  • Who is the best criminal defense attorney in [city]? commercial
  • Which personal injury law firm in [city] has the best client reviews? commercial

Method. 6 questions × 5 metros × 3 assistants = 90 answers, collected July 26, 2026 from ChatGPT (gpt-5-mini), Google Gemini (gemini-flash-latest), Perplexity (sonar). Every assistant was queried with web search enabled, because that is what a buyer's app does. Asked the same questions with search turned off, these models answer from memory and refuse to name almost anyone — a measurement of the model, not of your market. Business names were resolved across spelling variants within each metro before counting. Assistants are non-deterministic, so these figures describe one collection run on one date rather than a permanent state of the world — which is why we re-run it instead of quoting it forever.

Why it matters

Common website and intake problems can slow a prospective client down.

Slow follow-up

Prospective clients often contact several firms. Prompt, clear follow-up gives your firm a meaningful advantage.

Unqualified inquiries

Generic contact forms send cases you cannot take and miss the details that matter for the ones you can.

Scattered intake

Calls, emails, and forms live in different places, so staff spend hours re-typing the same client details.

An outdated website

A dated site can weaken confidence before a prospective client picks up the phone.

How intake works

From search or referral to an organized consultation.

A guided intake flow captures the right details up front, organizes them for your team, and routes each inquiry into the calendar and system your firm already uses.

Evidence you can inspect

Live production work you can inspect.

Legal work is judged on positioning and on how carefully sensitive information is handled. These three cover both: a niche practice sharpened to one line and made bilingual, a regulated workflow built around applicant data, and a healthcare platform that routes enquiries to the right office.

FAQ

Questions law firms ask.

Most custom websites launch in a few weeks, depending on practice areas and content. A full website plus intake system takes a little longer because we tailor the intake flow to each matter type. We will give you a clear timeline on your strategy call.

Yes. Our production work includes niche legal positioning, immigration workflows, structured intake, and systems for handling sensitive data. We build around fast follow-up, clear practice-area positioning, and getting organized case details to the right person before the consultation.

We scope privilege-sensitive and confidential intake explicitly: collect only what is needed before engagement, separate conflict-check information from deeper matter details, encrypt transmission and storage where required, apply least-privilege or role-based access, preserve audit logs, and define retention and deletion rules. The complete workflow and vendor agreements matter; a secure-looking form alone does not protect attorney-client information.

In most cases, yes. The intake system is designed to push leads into your CRM, book consultations on your calendar, and notify the right team member. We confirm the specifics for your stack during scoping.

That is what the research on this page measures. We run the same scan against your firm and your market, fix what is blocking you in structured data, profiles, and directory listings, then measure again so the change is on the record rather than asserted. No one can guarantee an assistant will name you.

By market

The same questions, city by city.

The numbers above are the study as a whole. Broken apart, each market has its own shortlist, its own level of disagreement, and its own set of sources deciding the answer — and they differ more than you would expect for identical questions.

  • Las Vegas, NV openness 63 · 45 named · most cited: Naqvi Accident Injury Law
  • Tampa, FL openness 74 · 48 named · most cited: Morgan & Morgan (Tampa office)
  • Denver, CO openness 67 · 43 named · most cited: Bachus & Schanker, LLC
  • Phoenix, AZ openness 64 · 40 named · most cited: Kelly Law Team Phoenix
  • Austin, TX openness 74 · 50 named · most cited: McMinn Law Firm

Openness measures how dispersed the names were — higher means the assistants repeated fewer of the same businesses. Law firms average 68.4 across these 5 cities. The full law firms study puts the five markets side by side; see also all 30 markets ranked and how the score is built.
