SEO optimizes your pages to rank in search engine results and earn clicks. AEO (answer engine optimization) optimizes your content and brand signals so AI systems — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — extract your information and name your business inside their answers. The foundations overlap heavily; the goals, formats, and measurement differ. You need both, and neither replaces the other.
That's the honest summary. The rest of this article covers where the two disciplines genuinely diverge, where the "AEO changes everything" crowd oversells it, and how a business with a finite budget should split the effort in 2026.
The one-sentence difference
SEO's unit of success is a ranking that produces a click. AEO's unit of success is a citation or mention inside an AI-generated answer — which frequently produces no click at all, just influence.
That last part is why AEO exists as a separate conversation. With 68% of US Google searches ending without a click (SparkToro, June 2026) and AI Overviews appearing on roughly 30% of queries, a meaningful share of buying decisions now forms inside the answer layer. You can rank #3 in the blue links and still be invisible in the paragraph customers actually read.
AEO vs SEO: side-by-side
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages, win clicks | Be named or cited in AI answers |
| Surface | Google/Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, voice assistants |
| Query shape | Short keywords ("tampa roofer") | Conversational questions ("who's a reliable roofer in Tampa for a tile roof?") |
| Content unit | The page | The passage — a self-contained, extractable answer |
| Authority | Backlinks, domain history | Corroborated entity data, reviews, presence on sources AI trusts, plus backlinks |
| Structure | Title tags, keywords, internal links | Question-form H2s, direct answers, schema markup, llms.txt |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, Search Console | Repeated sampling of AI answers: mention rate, citation sources, accuracy |
| Failure mode | Page 2 obscurity | AI recommends competitors — or describes you incorrectly |
Where they overlap (about 80% of the work)
Most of what makes SEO work makes AEO possible. Google's own AI documentation treats answer optimization as built on search fundamentals, and the data backs it: 99% of URLs surfaced in Google AI Mode come from the top 20 organic results. If your pages don't rank anywhere, they don't get retrieved; if they don't get retrieved, they can't be cited.
The shared foundation:
- Crawlable, fast, indexable pages. Answer engines read the same web Googlebot does. Content locked behind JavaScript or blocked crawlers is invisible to both.
- Genuine topical authority. Thin content loses in both games. First-hand expertise wins in both.
- Structured data. Schema helped you win rich results for years; now it helps language models parse your entity.
- E-E-A-T. Real authorship, real experience, real evidence. AI systems trained to avoid hallucination lean harder on corroborated, authoritative sources, not softer.
If you've done SEO well, you are not starting AEO from zero. You're reformatting and extending an asset you already built.
Where AEO genuinely differs
1. You optimize passages, not pages
An answer engine doesn't serve your page; it lifts a piece of it. The test we apply to every section we write: extracted alone, does this paragraph still make complete sense and answer a question? SEO tolerated conclusions that build slowly. AEO does not — the direct answer goes first, elaboration after.
2. Entity consistency outranks keyword targeting
In the scans we run through Radar, the businesses AI describes incorrectly almost always have conflicting information across their website, Google Business Profile, and directories — different service lists, old addresses, mismatched names. A language model reconciling three conflicting sources either skips you or guesses. No keyword strategy fixes that; boring data hygiene does.
3. Off-site presence does heavier lifting
When we trace which sources AI answers cite before recommending a local business, the pattern is consistent: Google Business Profile and reviews, industry directories, local press, Reddit and community threads. SEO treated some of those as secondary. For AEO they are primary source material — the model is literally reading them to decide who to recommend. This is where AEO shades into what some call generative engine optimization.
4. Measurement has no Search Console
There is no official dashboard for "how often does ChatGPT recommend me." AI answers are probabilistic — the same question asked ten times yields different names in different orders. Anyone judging AEO from one screenshot is fooling themselves in one direction or the other. Measurement means repeated, structured sampling: ask the real customer questions many times, across engines, on a schedule, and track the rate. That's the method behind our free AI visibility report, and it's the only honest way we know to answer "is this working?"
Will AEO replace SEO?
No. 32% of US Google searches still produce a click (SparkToro, June 2026), Google still holds ~90% of global search share, and commercial local queries — the ones worth money to a contractor or law firm — still drive calls, form fills, and map actions through traditional results. What's actually happening is layering: the answer layer is growing on top of search, absorbing informational queries first and influencing commercial decisions earlier in the journey.
The practical risk isn't that SEO dies. It's that a competitor gets named in the AI answer while you fight for a click that fewer people make.
Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?
Evolving, and faster than usual. The mechanical parts of old SEO — keyword-density content, exact-match domains, link volume for its own sake — were already dying. What remains and compounds is the part AI systems also reward: being a real entity with real expertise, publishing information that doesn't exist elsewhere, and structuring it so machines can parse it. If your SEO strategy was "publish generic articles and buy links," AEO doesn't threaten it. It finishes it.
How should a local business split the effort?
For the businesses we build for — contractors, law firms, specialty practices — we recommend sequencing, not splitting:
- Baseline both surfaces (week 1). Where do you rank for your money queries, and what does AI currently say about you? The second question takes three minutes with a free scan.
- Fix shared foundations first (weeks 1–4). Site speed, indexability, entity consistency, Google Business Profile completeness. Every hour here pays on both surfaces.
- Reformat your money pages (weeks 2–6). Question-form headings, direct answers, FAQ schema, real prices and specifics. This is the highest-leverage pure-AEO work.
- Build corroboration continuously. Reviews, directory completeness, one earned local mention per quarter. This moves AI recommendations more than anything on-site.
- Measure on a schedule, not on vibes. Weekly sampling, monthly judgment.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need separate content for AEO and SEO?
Usually not. One well-structured page serves both: it ranks because it's authoritative and satisfies intent, and it gets cited because its answers are extractable. The exceptions are answer-first assets like FAQ hubs and glossaries, which exist mostly for extraction. Duplicating every page "for AI" is wasted effort.
Is AEO just a new name for SEO?
No, but the marketing around it often is. The foundations are shared; what's new is optimizing passages for extraction, treating entity consistency and off-site corroboration as primary signals, and measuring via repeated sampling of AI answers instead of rank tracking. Those are real differences in daily work, not rebranding.
What is AEO in digital marketing?
In a digital marketing stack, AEO is the discipline that manages how AI assistants describe and recommend your brand: auditing what they currently say, fixing the content and data signals they draw from, and tracking mention rates over time — alongside SEO (rankings), paid media, and reputation management.
Can one page rank in Google and get cited by ChatGPT?
Yes, and it's the norm rather than the exception. Pages in Google's top 20 supply nearly all of AI Mode's citations, and well-structured direct answers are exactly what both Google's snippet systems and LLM retrieval prefer. Build once, win twice.
