Featured Snippet

A featured snippet is the boxed answer Google lifts from a page and shows at the top of results — the classic 'position zero.' Pages win it by answering a question directly in 40-60 words under a matching heading, which is the same shape AI systems prefer to quote.

The snippet format taught the industry what machines like: a question as a heading, a complete answer immediately, elaboration after. That structure now pays twice, because generative engines lift the same clean answers into their responses.

Snippets come in a few predictable shapes, and matching the shape to the question is most of the craft. Definitional and "what is" queries draw paragraph snippets of roughly 40–60 words. Process and "how to" queries draw ordered lists, which Google builds from sequential headings or a genuine numbered list. Comparison queries draw tables. Writing a paragraph where the results page consistently shows a table is a common way to do good work that cannot win.

You cannot request a snippet, and you generally cannot win one from nowhere: Google chooses from pages already ranking on the first page for that query. That makes snippet work a second pass over pages that already rank around positions three to eight, not a strategy for new content. Find the query, confirm a snippet exists, look at what shape it takes, and restructure your existing section to answer more cleanly than the incumbent.

The strategic ambiguity is worth naming honestly. Winning a snippet raises visibility and often lowers clicks, because the answer now appears without a visit. For a brand-building or AEO goal that trade is usually good — your name attaches to the answer. For a page whose only job is to sell, it can be a net loss, and the right move is sometimes to answer the question thoroughly enough to be credible while keeping the commercially useful detail on the page.

Every entry in this glossary follows the shape deliberately — direct answer first, nuance second. It reads slightly blunt to humans, and machines quote it whole.
