Zero-Click Search
A zero-click search ends without the searcher visiting any website: the answer appears directly on the results page via featured snippets, AI Overviews, local packs, or knowledge panels. For many local queries the majority of searches now resolve this way, which changes what visibility is worth pursuing.
Zero-click is not zero-value. A local pack impression with strong reviews, an AI Overview that names your business, a snippet that answers with your brand attached — these do commercial work without a click. The businesses hurt by zero-click are the ones whose strategy assumed traffic, not presence.
For local service businesses the pattern is often better than the label suggests, because the highest-intent action was never a website visit anyway. Someone who taps the call button in a local pack has converted without producing a session. Counted as a zero-click search, that is a loss; counted as a phone ringing, it is the best outcome available. Analytics that measure only sessions will report decline while the business gets busier.
The queries where zero-click genuinely costs you are informational ones you had been monetising with traffic. A guide that earned visits by answering a cost question can lose most of them to a summary that answers it on the results page. That argues for making sure such pages carry something the summary cannot — a calculator, local specifics, the next question a reader will have — and for not building a business on informational traffic alone.
It also raises the value of measurements that survive the shift. Impressions, branded search volume, direct calls, and share in AI answers keep working when sessions stop being the unit. A reporting stack built entirely on sessions will describe a shrinking business that is not shrinking.
The strategic response is to be the answer rather than the destination: structured facts machines can lift, a complete Google Business Profile, review evidence worth quoting. Traffic still matters for conversion pages; presence decides everything upstream of them.
