Striking-Distance Keywords
Striking-distance keywords are queries where a page already ranks just off the first page or low on it — roughly positions 8 through 25. They are the cheapest wins in SEO: the page has proven relevance, and a focused improvement often moves it into traffic-earning positions.
The discipline is working from measurement, not instinct: Search Console lists exactly which queries sit in range for which pages. From there the moves are mechanical — strengthen the page's answer to that query, align the title, add internal links from related pages, extend with what competing pages cover.
The reason this beats writing new content is arithmetic. Moving from position 12 to position 6 on a query with real volume can multiply that query's clicks several times over, because the click curve is steep near the top of page one and nearly flat below it. A new page starts from zero and typically needs months to reach the position the existing page already holds. Same effort, very different payback period.
Finding them takes one filtered report: last three months, average position between 8 and 25, sorted by impressions descending. Impressions are the qualifier, not position — a page at 11 with 4,000 impressions is worth attention, and one at 11 with 30 impressions is not, however close it looks. Then confirm intent match before touching anything, because a page ranking 14th for a query it was never built to answer needs a different page rather than an edit.
The judgment call is knowing when a page has plateaued for structural reasons. If the top ten are all national aggregators, or the query has shifted to a format your page cannot provide, position 12 may be the ceiling and further work is waste. Reading the SERP tells you which situation you are in.
This loop runs weekly here. It is how we caught our own money pages idling at positions 8–14 on expensive queries — the finding that redirected effort from creating new pages to sharpening ones that were already almost there.
