Building a Multilingual Product Finder for 40,000+ Grocery Items

Asian Market Escondido needed a store website and a better way for shoppers to search its inventory. Routeless built the website and a QR-code product finder that lets customers search more than 40,000 items in their preferred language.

Why the store needed a product finder

The market's previous website contained only a few pages and didn't reflect the size of its inventory or the multilingual needs of its shoppers. Customers needed an easier way to search for products in the store, and staff needed better channels for requests and updates. There was no useful historical website analytics baseline.

Multilingual in-store product search

We created the store website and a live-search product finder that shoppers open from an in-store QR code. They can search in different languages and find matching items from the store's catalog of more than 40,000 products.

  • Department and cuisine discovery in English and Spanish
  • A product locator backed by a large POS-derived Google Sheets catalog
  • Mapping tabs in the catalog that store staff control
  • Read-only Sheets API access with caching and degraded operation
  • Product requests, recipes, reviews, and visit information

More than 1,000 product finder uses

The product finder has been used more than 1,000 times. New analytics now show thousands of active website users and views, alongside measurable visibility in Google Search. Because reliable pre-launch tracking didn't exist, this case study does not claim a percentage increase in traffic.

Product requests and a staff-managed catalog

The catalog behind the finder lives in a spreadsheet the store's staff control, so product changes don't wait on a developer. We also introduced processes for staff updates, product requests, job applications, and new analytics visibility.
