Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Click-through rate is the share of people who saw a listing and clicked it — clicks divided by impressions. In Search Console it is the diagnostic that separates ranking problems from packaging problems: impressions without clicks mean you are seen and skipped.

CTR work is title-and-description work: does the listing promise what the searcher wants, specifically, credibly? A page ranking sixth with a generic title often earns less traffic than one ranking eighth with a precise promise. Titles that state the year, the number, the outcome pull disproportionate clicks at every position.

The caveat is zero-click reality: for many queries the SERP answers directly, and low CTR reflects the page furniture, not your snippet. Diagnose against the actual results page before rewriting anything.

Reading the number requires a baseline, because raw CTR is mostly a restatement of position. Position one on a clean query might draw a quarter of clicks; position eight might draw two percent. A page converting impressions at 3% is excelling at position nine and failing badly at position two. Compare each page against what its own position typically earns on your own site, not against a published industry table built from someone else's query mix.

Two Search Console artifacts mislead people regularly. Impressions count any appearance including deep on page two, so a page with thousands of impressions and a 0.4% CTR is usually not being skipped — it is barely being seen. And query-level data is sampled and truncated, so small numbers move violently. Neither is a reason to distrust the report; both are reasons to act on patterns across weeks rather than on a single week's row.

The honest limit of the whole exercise: CTR optimization redistributes clicks from an existing impression base. It is the fastest lever available when impressions are healthy and clicks are not, and it does nothing at all when the underlying problem is that too few people ever see the listing. Check the impression trend first, then the packaging. Striking-distance keywords covers the other half of that diagnosis.
